A dingo and a coconut

April 2021

Recently I spent 2 nights under canvas in the Southernmost camp zone on the East coast of K’gari (Fraser Island). There were no other camps within sight - paradise! I never have any expectations when I visit the island, but always leave having experienced something unique and amazing. On this occasion it was a chance encounter with a young dingo (wongari). I feel so privileged whenever I catch a glimpse of these wild animals.

Late afternoon I was at the ocean’s edge photographing clouds reflected in the incoming tide. I was focused on my next composition, enjoying the thrill of discovery that comes with a new lens, the Canon RF 100 - 500mm. Suddenly, something made me look up towards the treeline and it was then I saw a dingo heading tentatively towards me.

I was lucky to observe this young one trying to tear a coconut apart on the beach.

We were both pursued relentlessly by March flies! It seemed very agitated by their constant presence and pursuit.

Eventually the dingo abandoned it’s find to pursue a passing motorbike.
